INTRODUCTION

The novel That Kind of Mother is written by Runaan Alam who is a celebrated American writer. In this novel, the writer tells a story of a first-time mother who feels overwhelmed by her new responsibilities. Rebecca, an affluent white woman, hires Priscilla, a black woman on the hospital staff, to be a nanny to her son. While Priscilla reassures Rebecca and teaches her about motherhood, she also shakes her out of some of her complacent assumptions about race and privilege. Then Priscilla dies in childbirth, Rebecca adopts her son, and, as the white mother of a black boy, learns deeper and harder lessons about race, inequality, and expectations.

This paper is divided into two major parts: translation and essay.

In these five chapters, Rebecca loves her newborn son as much as many new mothers do. But she didn’t know how to be a proper mother. She struggled to find a balance between motherhood and work, which was very difficult for her. This novel can give us a deeper understanding of maternal love and class. It plays an indispensable role in promoting us to love life, love others and be positive. Therefore, I choose this novel as my translation text. 

The paper is divided into four parts. The first part is the introduction, which introduces the background knowledge of the translated work. The second part is mainly about the process of translation, which includes the preparatory work I did; the third part mainly describes the problems encountered in the translation process and the basis and methods of solution; the fourth part is the conclusion which is the summary and reflection of the translation practice.

翻译部分选取《那种母亲》中的第三到第七章。在这五章中，丽贝卡和许多新妈妈一样爱她刚出生的儿子。但她不知道怎么做个称职的母亲。她努力在做母亲和工作之间找到平衡，这对她来说是非常困难的。

全文共分为四个部分。第一部分是引言，介绍了翻译作品的背景知识。第二部分主要是翻译过程，包括译者所做的准备工作；第三部分主要描述了翻译过程中遇到的问题以及解决的依据和方法；第四部分是结论，是对翻译实践的总结和思考。
