摘要：委婉语是沟通中常见的一种语言现象，是人类为了达到理想交际效果而采用的一种策略，有着重要的交际功能。同一种交际意图可以通过不同的语言表达方式，以此体现出礼貌程度的差异。国外语言学家Leech推陈出新，提出了礼貌原则及其六条准则，分别是：得体准则、慷慨准则、赞誉准则、谦逊准则、一致准则、同情准则。《是，大臣》作为英国饱受赞誉的政治讽刺喜剧，主人公均是浸淫政界多年的老油条，在委婉语的使用上炉火纯青。本论文阐述了《是，大臣》中的委婉语是如何遵循礼貌原则的六条准则，分析英国文化背景下如何礼貌地与政界同事或上司交际，实现委婉语的交际功能。
