一、教材内容分析
This unit is the fifth unit in New Standard English Book 1 of Senior 1. This unit mainly focuses on the topic of “the relationship between humans and animals”, and takes the adverbs “when”, “where” and “why” as examples to learn attributive clauses. In the period of Starting out and Understanding ideas, students are supposed to develop their reading skill. This period also presents the background, purpose and mode of monarch butterfly's migration. In the period of Using language, students can learn attributive clauses and master the usage of relative adverbs. There are also some interesting animal idioms. Reading activities and listening activities are all centered on wild animals. Students can think more about the relationship between human and animals, and develop a sense of protecting animals. In the period of Developing ideas, reading and writing activities are designed so that students are able to grasp more detail information of wild animals. In addition, the reading material for this period is a passage about an encounter with nature written by a photographer. It can not only attract students’ interests in learning, but also prepare for the writing later. The following writing activity is about animals as well. Students can learn to write an animal fact file by themselves and develop their writing ability. In the period of Presenting ideas and Reflection, it is mainly about speaking practice. Students can tell a film or story about relationships between humans and animals and use what they have learnt in this unit properly. All in all, the topic of “human and animals” is closely related to students’ life, and can easily arouse students' interest in learning and make them willing to participate in learning activities. What’s more, students can deeply realize the relationship between humans and animals and develop a correct value of protecting animals after learning this unit.
