As a student, Marisol lived on a tight budget. In choosing her groceries though, she had always felt that it was best to buy “green” products whenever she could afford it, even if it cost a bit more. She believed these products came from companies that respected the earth as much as she did. Marisol especially thought it was important to buy “sustainably harvested” fish because she loved the ocean and wanted to do all she could to protect marine ecosystems.

Marisol felt that this would make a good topic for her persuasive speech. She could educate her classmates on the virtues of spending the extra money for sustainably harvested fish and raise awareness among her peers about vital marine ecology issues. She was excited about her topic and ready to begin her research.

Marisol began her research by checking to see what was available in the seafood department at Whole Foods and making note of the price differences between regular and “sustainably caught” fish. Her next step was to search the Internet. The amount of information she found was over-whelming and sometimes contradictory. Some sites even suggested that these “sustainably caught” claims were no more than a marketing ploy. Consumers, they said, were being “greenwashed,” duped into paying more for products by labeling them as “sustainable.” Actually, they contended, the populations from which these fish were harvested could not possibly survive in the long term with the pressures that commercial fishing was imposing on them.

Which sources were telling the truth? Was Marisol herself a victim of “green-washing”? How could she ensure that she had the most accurate and unbiased information possible? Marisol realized that it would take careful research and critical thinking skills to develop an ethical and unbiased speech on this topic and that she might even have to change her own point of view.
