Abstract
Harry Potter series is a series of magic literature written by J.K. Rowling, a British writer. There are seven books in the series. The series has been translated into 75 languages. By 2015, the total sales volume of all editions has exceeded 450 million, ranking the best-selling novel series in the world. This series of stories revolves around the protagonist Harry Potter, and takes Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as the main stage. It tells about the life and study of young wizards, as well as a series of adventures to resist Lord Voldemort. The characters in the story, good before bad, have their own characteristics. Among them, 'double agent' Severus Snape is the most special. In J.K Rowling's works, Severus Snape is a gloomy, indifferent and unsmiling man, but he is also a courageous, just and loving man. He circles between the Order of the Phoenix and the Death Eaters, putting himself in a situation where he will never be able to survive without paying attention. He has no choice but to be misunderstood. In this way, a contradictory figure of Severus Snape is created. The figure, which is contradictory, endows the character of Severus Snape with infinite charm. This thesis will anatomize the character of Severus Snape from nine aspects: appearance, character, talent, magic wand, patron saint, blood, young experience, double-sided spy and love in the heart, so that readers can understand the contradiction of the character in a deeper level. This paper is divided into three chapters. The first chapter introduces the creation background of the series and the origin of the name of Severus Snape. The second chapter is to examine the character of Severus Snape from the nine aspects mentioned above. The third chapter is the conclusion part, which summarizes the main points of the thesis.
