Abstract
Dickens is an outstanding British critical realistic writer in the 19th century. A Tale of Two Cities is one of his representative works, showing his humanitarian thoughts incisively and vividly. The first chapter introduces the research background, purpose and significance of humanitarianism in A Tale of Two Cities. The second one summarizes the domestic and foreign scholars for the studies of humanitarianism in A Tale of Two Cities. The third one analyzes the definition of humanitarianism by different scholars and the author's views on humanitarianism. The fourth one further expounds the specific content of Dickens’ humanitarianism through the analysis of the main characters in the work. The fifth one reveals the progressive era of humanitarianism and its significance of today’s society.
