INTRODUCTION

Avon street is written by Emmanuel Paul. The novel is mainly about the story of James who has changed his own life because of a crime. James has to come to the Avon street to seek for help. He meets many people that live at the bottom of society in Avon street for various reasons. All the characters have different destinies because of their different choices. 

Firstly, the author makes the opening remark with the death of Thomas Hunter, which arouses readers’ curiosity. Also, it establishes an atmosphere of sadness and despair for the whole story. In the first chapter, the author describes the kindness of James in details, but then he writes the sense of gambling in the second chapter to show James’s excitement and struggle. Through the contrast, the process of James’s degenerating shows forth in his writing. Finally, in the third chapter, the author introduces another protagonist Belle, who lives by dancing and raises a daughter by herself. She is so beautiful that be harassed. However, she can’t fight because she need to pay rent with her roommate Jenny and struggle to earn a living. 

 My translation practice mainly includes four parts. The first part is introducing the whole story, the second part is summarizing the original that I translate and then record the steps that how the whole process of translation practice is carried out. The third part is doing the translation. The forth part is summing up the problems in translation practice and find out the corresponding. I can apply usages of words and expressions learned from translation practice to my English study and that make me benefit greatly.

《雅芳街》的作者是埃马努埃利 保罗，这部小说主要讲述了主人公詹姆斯因为一场冲动之下的犯罪，改变了自己的整个生活，他不得不来到雅芳街，寻求盟友的帮助。在那里他遇到了很多因为各种各样的原因不得不在雅芳街讨生活的社会底层人民，他们也因为各自不同的选择而有了不同的命运。本次翻译实践选择了第1-3章。

第1-3章介绍了书中的几个主要人物，首先作者用托马斯亨特的死亡开篇，引起读者的好奇心，也为全文奠定了一种悲伤绝望的氛围。第一章作者用几个小场景描写了小说主角詹姆斯的内心善良，但随即在第二章作者就着笔于描写詹姆斯参与赌博的兴奋狂热和内心的挣扎不安，通过这一对比，詹姆斯本来内心善良但却渐渐沉沦堕落的形象跃然纸上。在第三章，作者介绍了本文的另一个主人公贝尔，贝尔是一个独自抚养女儿的舞女，她工作环境恶劣，时不时受到骚扰，只能和室友珍妮合租，艰难地讨生活。

本次的翻译实践小论文主要包括四个部分。第一部分是介绍原文的大概内容，第二部分是记录翻译实践的整个过程是如何开展的，第三部分是做翻译，第四部分是归纳总结在翻译实践中出现的问题，并根据每个类型的问题找到相应的解决办法，最后对整个翻译实践进行总结。
