摘要：《红字》是美国作家纳撒尼尔·霍桑笔下的作品之一，也是象征主义文学的代表作。字母A的象征意义复杂多变，前期它是通奸和孤独的象征，其后逐渐演变成了能干和先进的象征。作者设定的人物也被赋予了特殊的象征意义：不甘世俗限制勇于捍卫爱情的海斯特，一心只为复仇的齐灵渥斯，懦弱无能的丁梅斯代尔以及天真无暇的珠儿。在对环境的描写中，作者将监狱比喻成文明社会中的黑花，将玫瑰丛作为海斯特的激情和不可知的未来的象征，将森林作为海斯特、丁梅斯代尔和珠儿三人团聚的“家庭”的象征。象征主义的写作手法不仅使《红字》成为经久不衰的文学经典，对历史和文化的研究有一定的意义,也极大地丰富了小说的思想内涵，深化了道德主题，让读者从不同层次更深刻地理解作品。
