Abstract
In recent years, English picture books have been increasingly used in primary school English learning as high-quality English learning resources, and English picture books have gradually become a highlight of primary school English teaching in China. English picture books are especially suitable for multimodal teaching because of their obvious advantages of both pictures and text and great storytelling.
Based on the above background, this dissertation takes the multimodal theory as the research foundation and analyzes the application of multimodal theory in the primary school English picture book reading teaching after collecting and analyzing the relevant research of multimodal theory and picture book teaching systematically. The dissertation is divided into five parts. The first part mainly introduces the background, purpose, significance and layout of the research. The second part collects and summaries the relevant studies of picture books and picture book teaching by scholars at home and abroad. The third part collects and analyzes the related theories of multimodality and the related research of multimodal teaching. The fourth part is the key part of the dissertation. From the perspective of multimodal theory, it discusses and analyzes the specific application of multimodal theory in picture book teaching by combining with the relevant cases of teaching design in the picture book teaching. The last part summarizes the related content of the dissertation and draws a conclusion: the application of multimodal theory to picture book teaching has not only theoretical significance, but also practical significance. Therefore, teachers should constantly improve teaching strategies. They should use various methods to actively mobilize students' various senses to participate in picture book learning, and carry out multimodal teaching of picture books.
